For the official engagement photo of Prince William and Kate Middleton, by Mario Testino, Kate Middleton chose to wear a dainty and very classy pair of earrings from Links of London.

The earrings were egg-shaped, which symbolises “hope” in the Russian culture, and featured white topaz stones. Links of London were selling them for £275, over $400, but they quickly sold out and are no longer available. A fight broke out in the New York Links store as people fought over the last pair of earrings!

The Heart of the Ocean and the Movie “Titanic”

Winslet’s character, Rose DeWitt Bukater, was given the Heart of the Ocean necklace, by her fiance Caledon Hockley and she was wearing it when she was drawn nude by fellow Titanic passenger, Jack Dawson on board in 1912. The necklace was supposed to feature a large blue diamond once owned by Louis XIV: the Hope Diamond, also known as Le Coeur de la Mer. It is this drawing which is found by treasure hunter Brock Lovett and his team when they explore the wreck of the Titanic in 1996 in the movie.

In the movie, a jealous Caledon, or Cal, frames Jack for stealing the necklace by ordering his bodyguard to slip it into Jack’s coat pocket. Jack is arrested and handcuffed to a pipe in the Master-at-arms’s office. As the Titanic gets into trouble, Jack manages to break free, with the help of an axe and arrives on board in time to help Cal to persuade Rose to get into a lifeboat. Cal promises Rose that he has made arrangements for both he and Jack to take another lifeboat but it is a lie, he has only made arrangements for himself. Rose suddenly realises that she cannot leave Jack and, as the boat lowers, she flings herself back on board the Titanic. Rose and Jack are then chased by a pistol brandishing Cal but he runs out of ammunition and decides to save himself by boarding a lifeboat. He realises too late that Rose is wearing his coat and that the Heart of the Ocean necklace is in its pocket.

The ship splits in two and the stern rises with Jack and Rose holding onto it for dear life. Unfortunately, the wall panel which Jack helps Rose to hang onto will only hold one person’s weight and although Rose is saved Jack perishes. Rose is taken to New York where she starts a new life under the name of Dawson, Jack’s last name.

Rose contacts Lovett and his team and recounts her story. Afterwards, she heads off to the stern of Lovett’s boat and drops the Heart of the Ocean into the ocean, where she feels it belongs. It is this necklace which Daniela has replicated using:-

• A silver-plated one inch long pendant as the setting for the sapphire crystal

Real Life

Kate Florence Phillips, a real life Titanic survivor, owned a sapphire necklace which was apparently given to her by her married lover Samuel Morely. The couple were fleeing to America to begin a new life together when the shop sank and Morely perished. It is believed that their story and Kate’s necklace may have inspired director James Cameron.

The Hope Diamond

The Hope Diamond is thought to have formed perhaps as long ago as 1.1 billion years and it is alleged to have originated in the Kollur Mine in India. In 1678, Louis XIV, King of France, commissioned Sieur Pitau, the court jeweler, to recut the blue diamond and set it on a cravat pin. It became known as the Blue Diamond of the Crown of France or the French Blue. In 1749, Louis XV had it set into a pendant for the Order of the Golden Fleece but during the reign of Louis XVI, during the French Revolution, the French Crown jewels were stolen and disappeared. It was said that the executions of Louis and Marie Antoinette were due to the diamond’s curse.

After many changes of ownership, the Hope Diamond was finally donated to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

was never on the Titanic in 1912 but this 45.52 carat diamond was one of the jewels stolen during the reign of Louis XVI.
